First there was the SUN… then there was darkness !
In his attempt to survive through darkness, Stone Age man created light by striking flint stones. With time, the lamp evolved and in the 18th century, oil lamp with wick was founded. Around the same time, small glass chimneys were added to lamps to protect and control the flow of air to the flame. Early lighting fuels comprised animal fat, vegetable oil or beeswax (later made into candles). 1890s saw the invention of tubular torches and batteries, another milestone in the journey of light. The need for light was felt right at the beginning of evolution when man was more a child of nature. A sudden bolt of lightening set a forest on fire which motivated him to conquer darkness.
He moved on to creating hand-held torches from the bark of tree or even hollow animal bones. It was not long before man discovered that a bundle of sticks tied together made a blazing torch, producing a bright and relatively handy source of light, when he went hunting outside. 
He invented the first primitive lamp around 70,000 BC, when hollow shells or rocks were filled up with weeds and soaked in animal fat, acting as fuel, for illuminating his cave. But there was always the risk of the oil tipping over and getting ignited. 
Towards the middle of the 18th century, drilling of petroleum began and kerosene lamps became popular. However, wax candles were expensive and the kerosene lamps generated a lot of smell and smoke, with a risk of starting fire.
With time, methods of illumination evolved and the electric bulb came into existence ushering in modern times. Suddenly with the flick of a switch, MAN once and for all, stepped out of the dark ages.
